Twenty-two years ago, when Richard Compton designed a contemporary home for a secluded Great Falls site, he could not have known how many of his ideas would look as fresh in 2003 as they did then.

Nestled amid trees on a 13/4-acre lot, the house fills with sunlight during the day through walls of windows on three sides and large skylights.

With the addition of a deep, heated in-ground swimming pool and in-ground spa surrounded by a pebbled concrete deck, a sybaritic private paradise has been designed into the woods.

Now on the market for $1,225,000, the home at 207 River Park Drive in Great Falls was built by William Foley. Residents can stroll to the Potomac River and the private Riverbend Country Club or just enjoy sharing their piece of the woods with the many deer and foxes who visit.

Despite the seclusion, Great Falls Village Center and the Beltway are just minutes away by car, as are Reston Town Center, McLean and Tysons Corner.

Views of nature are framed by windows all over the house, which has rooms with high ceilings and angled walls that echo the rooms created by the forest just outside.

The architect included outdoor living spaces, including a handsome flagstone front patio, a wood deck across the back of the house and a flagstone terrace, which links the deck and the pebbled concrete swimming pool deck.

A screened porch at the side of the house has a soaring high ceiling with a ceiling fan and double-height screens, which maximize the view and the breeze.

Inside, the home has about 6,000 finished square feet on two levels. The glass double-front doors open onto a splashy two-level foyer with Italian marble flooring underfoot and dramatic views of the living room and dining room to the left and the family room to the right.

Tucked off a small hall leading away from the foyer is a secluded study with a picture window overlooking the trees and built-in oak bookcases along one wall.

Along with most of the main-level rooms, the study has hardwood flooring and track lighting. Both track and recessed lighting have been used extensively throughout the home.

The inviting living room has angled walls, a wall of windows, a large skylight in the vaulted ceiling, hardwood flooring and a wood-burning fireplace.

The living room opens onto the dining room, which has hardwood flooring and sliding glass doors on two sides. One set of glass doors leads to the screened porch, while the other opens onto the deck leading to the swimming pool.

The center-island kitchen and breakfast area are accessible from both the dining room and a hall leading from the foyer.

This dramatic open space has Italian marble flooring to match the foyer, recessed and suspended canister lighting and a wall of windows, including a deep bay window and two sets of sliding glass doors leading to the deck.

The kitchen has been upgraded with sleek contemporary-style oak cabinets, Corian counters, a Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezer, a double oven and a Jenn-Air cooktop on the island, along with a second sink.

Nearly half of the rest of the main level has been designed as a double-size family room.

Along one wall is a wet bar, and two walls are filled with windows framing woodland views. Hardwood flooring underfoot adds warmth to the space, which has built-in bookcases to add definition to the open space, a wood-burning stove on a raised-brick hearth and a spiral staircase in one corner leading to the home office and master suite upstairs.

The master suite has been ingeniously designed as one large, open room with a carpeted platform to define the area for the bed.

A vaulted ceiling and a large window add drama to the room, which has a double-size walk-in closet and hardwood flooring. Along one wall is a fireplace with another raised-brick hearth surrounded by built-in bookcases with carefully placed recessed lighting.

Adjacent to the master bedroom is the master bath, which has white ceramic tile brightened with cobalt-blue tile accents, a deep whirlpool tub placed under a large skylight, a separate shower, a bidet and a double-sink vanity. A large linen closet completes this bath.

The spiral staircase from the family room leads directly into the home office upstairs, which can also be accessed from the master bedroom and the hall.

This spectacular space can be easily reconverted as the fourth bedroom, with access to a connecting bath off the third bedroom. Currently, the home office includes walls of built-in desk space and cabinets, along with large skylights and plenty of windows.

Along the upper-level hall are two large linen closets and a laundry room with a sink and built-in cabinets for extra storage.

Each of the two additional bedrooms has a private full bath with colorful tile accents and wood vanities, along with large closets and tall windows overlooking the woods.

Three-zone heating and air conditioning add to the comfort of residents of this home, which has an intercom, security system and central vacuum system.

Residents of Great Falls appreciate the serenity of their community, a woodland setting that easily absorbs Colonial-style homes, fairy-tale Victorians with turrets and wraparound porches, imposing stone Tudor-style mansions, and sleek, warm contemporary dwellings such as this one in Riverbend Farm.
