Washington area builders were recognized for excellence in their craft at the 46th annual Finest for Family Living Awards on Oct. 30 at the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner.

More than 1,000 builders, land planners and architects gathered for the event. They honored builder Martin Alloy with a lifetime-achievement award.

The Lofts at Adams Morgan was named best in show.

The annual honors go to metropolitan Washington home-building companies whose homes have been rated as the year’s best in design and value by a panel of their peers.

Mr. Alloy, of Stanley Martin Cos. Inc., is one of the area’s most recognized and successful home builders, according to Debbie Rosenstein, Finest for Family Living Awards chairman.

“Martin Alloy is one of the driving forces behind the Washington-area real estate industry,” she says. His career spans 37 years, and his influence has touched thousands of homes in the metropolitan area.

The Lofts at Adams Morgan, built by P.N. Hoffman and designed by architects Eric Colbert & Associates, was named best in show because it is “an urban masterpiece,” Ms. Rosenstein says.

Judging elements included floor-plan innovation, balance of design, value and curb appeal, and consumer acceptance.

Entries competed in 16 categories and 65 divisions, including single-family homes, town homes and condominiums, active adult communities, rental communities, renovations, site and land planning, high-tech innovation, and high-end custom homes. Developments in the competition are located in greater Washington, as well as some more rural areas in Virginia and Maryland.

“The Washington new-homes market is one of the most competitive in the country,” Ms. Rosenstein says. “The FFL awards program is the most prestigious residential-design competition in this market. Winning an award translates into true value for the consumer.”

The 2003 awards sponsors include Classic Concept Builders Inc., First Horizon Construction Lending, Key Bank, M&T; Mortgage, the New Homes Guide, Virtual Solutions and The Washington Times.

The Northern Virginia Building Industry Association and Maryland-National Capital Building Association present the awards each year. For details, visit www.fflawards.com.
