A classic Reston home isn’t the same as a classic home in other communities. Reston has its share of brick front, center-hall Colonials, but this planned community is better known for its contemporary homes clad in natural tones that blend with the surrounding trees and lakes.

Waterfront and water-view homes in Reston compete with those with wooded views to represent the true Reston house.

The home at 11584 Greenwich Point Road, now on the market for $929,900, offers the delights of a woodland setting that transforms to an autumn view of Lake Newport when the leaves begin to fall.

This contemporary home is located on a quiet cul-de-sac and has a gray siding exterior with mature trees, an elegant curving low brick wall to define the front yard, and a brick walkway with a garden bed in the center leading to the front door. In addition to the two-car garage, this home has a wide asphalt driveway for parking two additional cars, plus ample street parking is available when entertaining.

The home has been designed with an easy flow for entertaining, with large rooms, high ceilings and three decks for outdoor relaxation. Multiple windows in every room have been designed with varying shapes and sizes, and each frames a view of the trees. Skylights have been placed all over the house to maximize the light and blur the line between being indoors and outdoors. Remote-controlled light fixtures and ceiling fans add to the home’s comfort.

The main level features gleaming maple flooring in all rooms, and the floor plan includes angled walls and small sets of steps that lead from one area to another. The foyer provides a gracious spot for admiring the dramatic window wall at the back of the great room. Nearby are the guest closet and powder room.

The great room includes a two-sided rose-colored tile fireplace, custom-designed columns, a wall of windows including two French doors to the main deck, and transom windows and a half-moon window above. The dining room, an open space adjacent to the great room, shares the views through the window wall.

The kitchen has been upgraded in recent years with black marble counters, a large black marble center island with a cooktop and breakfast bar, maple flooring and state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances by Thermador and Viking, including a double oven.

Ridged pale-maple cabinets add interest to the room, which has a built-in desk, a pantry, and recessed lighting. In addition to the breakfast bar, owners can choose to dine outside on the second deck, designed for barbecuing and enjoying the woods.

The family room, currently functioning as a breakfast room, is open to the kitchen to create one large space. A raised-hearth fireplace sits at one end, while one wall has two sets of sliding glass doors to the deck with transom windows above. A few steps lead from the family room to the garage door and to the laundry room, which has extra cabinets and a sink in addition to the washer and dryer. A laundry chute from the upper level leads to a door across from the laundry room.

The first-floor master suite, located on the opposite side of the foyer, features a cathedral ceiling, multiple windows and a glass door to a private balcony. Off the bedroom are an oversized walk-in closet with a window, a vanity with a sink and plenty of drawers, and a bath with another vanity with a sink, a whirlpool tub set under a skylight, and a large glass-enclosed shower.

Upstairs, a loft overlooks the great room and the dining room and is well-lit by skylights and the window wall of the great room. The loft can function for nearly any pursuit of the residents, including as a home office, a library, a play area or just an upper-level sitting room.

The first bedroom off the loft includes a private personal loft accessible by a ladder, and all the rooms have plenty of sunshine pouring in through custom windows of varying shapes and sizes. The second bedroom has a charming nook along one side created by the sloping ceiling.

These two bedrooms share a full bath off the hall. Storage and linen closets line the hallway leading to the private third bedroom, which can function as a second master suite.

The third bedroom has a sloping ceiling, a small hallway with closets on either side with mirrored doors, and a few steps up to a private full bath with a skylight.

The finished lower level provides plenty of additional living space and includes a walk-out through two sets of French doors to the back yard. Windows on three sides of the room frame views of the trees.

This floor has two open areas separated by a low step and a half-wall. The upper area, currently functioning as a home office, has a wall of closets and an adjacent full bath. This space could easily be remodeled into a fifth bedroom, if desired.

The larger portion of the lower level, the recreation room, has recessed lighting and built-in cabinets that help define the space. Adjacent to this room but hidden behind a wall is 1,500 square feet of unfinished space that is available for creating an exercise room or media room, if desired.

With more than 5,000 finished square feet of living space, this contemporary home can function as an entertainer’s paradise or a place for the family to commune with nature.

Reston’s recreational amenities may draw the residents out to play tennis, swim and jog, but the home at Greenwich Point Road will beckon them back to sit on the deck or relax by the fire.
