Polls show this year’s presidential race every bit as close as the 2000 election. Voters who supported President Bush four years ago who now support John Kerry are everywhere. So, where then are this year’s Bush supporters who voted for former Vice President Al Gore in 2000?

Meet Dr. John Schmitt.

The obstetrician at University of Virginia Health System supported Mr. Gore in 2000.

“I read his book and thought he was very intelligent,” he said of Mr. Gore’s environmental book, “Earth in the Balance.”

And this year, he had been planning to vote for John Kerry. “I actually like John Kerry,” Dr. Schmitt said.

But all that changed on July 6 when the Massachusetts Democrat picked as his running mate former personal injury lawyer John Edwards.

“The moment he chose John Edwards, all of his credibility just went out,” said Dr. Schmitt, who worked for 20 years in Mr. Edwards’ hometown and personally knows doctors who have been sued by the senator.

He will vote for Mr. Bush in November, he said.
