John R. Peebles Sr., 44, minister of music

The Rev. John R. Peebles Sr., minister of music at one of the largest churches in the Washington area and the son of its celebrated senior pastor, has died. He was 44.

Mr. Peebles died at Georgetown University Hospital of a medical problem that hasn’t yet been determined, said Bobby Henry, legal counsel for the Jericho City of Praise church in Landover, Md.

Mr. Peebles had been minister of music for more than 20 years at Jericho. His mother, the Rev. Betty P. Peebles, is senior pastor at the church.

With 19,000 members, Jericho is one of the largest churches in the area. It recently celebrated the payment in full of the $36 million mortgage on its campus.

As minister of music at the 10,000-seat sanctuary, “he was there … leading the choir during the mortgage burning service,” Mr. Henry said.

Mr. Peebles, who lived in New Carrollton, is survived by his wife, Yarnetta; a son, John Jr.; a daughter, Yolanda; his mother; and a brother, Joel, also a minister at the church. Another brother, James R. Peebles Jr., died in 1997 from a heart attack.
