It’s hard to believe that a house within three minutes of the Capital Beltway and Georgetown Pike could present such a serene atmosphere. With its woodland views and a path leading from the back of the house down to Scotts Run Nature Preserve, the home at 984 Saigon Road in McLean seems as if it exists in its own private park far from busy roads and a hectic lifestyle.

Yet this contemporary home offers a location just minutes away from McLean; Tysons Corner; downtown Washington; and, of course, the Beltway.

Now on the market for $995,000, this contemporary-style residence built in 1964 offers quiet and privacy for its owners. Garden beds and green lawns line the driveway to the front door, but it is the back of the house where the family has watched the seasons change, each with its own spectacular delights.

A wide deck wraps around the back and sides, offering views of the forest. Steps lead from the deck to a gently sloping lawn with a children’s play area and a set of wood steps leading through the woods to the edge of the stream.

Fruit trees and herb and flower gardens grace a terraced area next to the side of the home. Balconies off the bedroom level add private spaces for enjoying the natural beauty of the property, which measures 1.32 acres.

Tall windows bring the forest view inside the home wherever possible, starting with the spectacular central two-story living room. The home has been positioned for maximum winter sun throughout the center of the structure, yet it also takes advantage of the shade provided by the trees to keep the home cool in summer.

Guests can be welcomed under the portico entrance, which will soon have a brick patio underneath.

Inside, the marble foyer offers a touch of elegance and opens onto the two-story living room. Most of the main level features hardwood flooring, as does the second level.

A sliding glass door links the living room to the deck, and two levels of windows open the indoors to the outdoors in this room.

Adjacent to the living room is the family room, which has a brick fireplace, parquet wood flooring and two walls of windows. A set of pocket doors links the family room to the library, which has built-in shelving in one corner, parquet flooring and a closet with shelving. The library could easily function as an additional guest bedroom, if needed.

On the opposite side of the home are the dining room and spacious kitchen. The dining room includes a side window overlooking the fruit trees and herb garden, along with a sliding glass door and an exposed wood beam across the ceiling.

The nearby kitchen has been renovated with an Italian tile floor; charming peach-toned backsplash tiles, which match the cabinet knobs, all around the room; and Corian counters with colorful trim on the edges.

The upgraded appliances include an Elan cooktop, two Dacor stainless-steel wall ovens and a stainless-steel dishwasher. The kitchen includes an exposed beam ceiling and a door to a small side deck and walkway to the detached garage.

Underneath the garage is a large workroom or hobby space, which is air conditioned and includes built-in shelving. This room could function easily for a variety of projects and for storage.

In the main house, a wood staircase leads from the foyer to the upper level, where a wood gallery surrounds the two-story living room. The master bedroom has a cathedral ceiling, tall windows and a sliding glass door to a private balcony with a view of the woods and stream.

Mirrored closets flank a dressing area leading into the private master bath.

The upper-level laundry room, once a fourth bedroom, includes new Neptune appliances, carpeting and a large window. This room has a closet and extra space for storage.

Near the laundry room is another full bath, which serves the two additional bedrooms on this level.

The front bedroom has a sloping ceiling, windows facing the woods and an additional tall window in the corner. The third bedroom, nearly as large as the master bedroom, has a cathedral ceiling, plenty of space for a study center or sitting area, and a sliding glass door to a private balcony.

The finished lower level features new Berber carpeting on the stairs and in all the rooms. Each room has an exposed wood beam or two in the ceiling, and the central recreation room has a sliding glass door leading to the patio and back yard, plus a fireplace with adjacent storage.

On one side of the storage room is a fourth bedroom, currently in use as a home office, which has a closet and a door to the side yard near the workshop under the garage.

The fifth bedroom is on the opposite side of the recreation room. In addition, this level includes a full bath, a linen closet, another closet with shelves and two large unfinished storage rooms.

Although it was built 40 years ago, this contemporary home has been upgraded and maintained to easily meet current sensibilities.
