The Aranui III annually sets sail on its 16 16-day cruises to the Marquesas from Papeete, Tahiti. It offers 75 comfortable air-conditioned cabins, 10 suites and a dormitory with bunk beds. Fares, which run from about $2,200 to $5,300, include delicious ship’s meals, wine, extensive land excursions and island feasts.

For ship information, write Compagnie Polynienne de Transport Maritime, 2028 El Camino Real South, Suite B, San Mateo, CA 94403 or call 800/972-7268 or fax 415/574-6881. Aranui III’s Web site is www.aranui.com.

Winter and summer Marquesan temperatures vary just 3 degrees, and the average temperature is 77 degrees. The rainy season is December through March.

Air Tahiti Nui flies four seven-hour flights weekly from Los Angeles to Tahiti on comfortable 747 jets, and it is highly recommended.
