The Washington Redskins won’t have to wait long for a reunion with Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey.

Bailey and his new club, the Denver Broncos, will play Washington in the Hall of Fame Game Aug.9 in Canton, Ohio, according to the preseason schedule released yesterday by the league. The contest will open the NFL’s preseason and is the first of two Redskins exhibitions on national television.

Washington, which this month traded Bailey and a second-round pick to Denver for running back Clinton Portis, is scheduled to play four other preseason games — vs. Carolina (sometime between Aug.12 and Aug.16), at Miami (Aug.19-23), at St. Louis (Aug.27) and vs. Atlanta (Sept.2-5).

ABC (Chs.7, 2) will televise the Broncos matchup at 9p.m., while the Rams game will be shown nationally on Fox (Chs.5, 45) at 8p.m. Specific dates for the Panthers, Dolphins and Falcons games will be finalized later. Each will be shown locally on Channel 9.

The Broncos and Detroit Lions would have been the natural selections for this year’s Hall of Fame game because longtime Denver quarterback John Elway and Detroit running back Barry Sanders are first-ballot inductees.

The NFL instead opted for the Redskins and recently rehired coach Joe Gibbs, a Hall selection in 1996, as the Broncos’ opponent.

Note — The Redskins officially signed cornerback Ralph Brown, a former New York Giant who agreed to terms last week on a two-year, $1.4million deal.
