Hazel L. Tyree, 84, data supervisor

Hazel L. Tyree, a retired data assembly supervisor for the National Geographic Society, died May 14 of lung cancer at her Northwest home. She was 84.

Mrs. Tyree was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Alleghany County, Va. After graduating from the Dunlap School in Alleghany in 1936, she worked for the Industrial Rayon Corp. in Covington, Va., during World War II.

In 1941, she married Benjamin Percy Tyree, who died in 1976. Their son, Benjamin P. Tyree, is a deputy Commentary editor at The Washington Times.

Mrs. Tyree and her family moved to the District in 1951. She joined the staff of National Geographic in 1958, initially working in the subscription section at the Eckington branch in Northeast.

She retired in 1984 as a supervisor in the National Geographic Society’s data assembly division in Gaithersburg.

Mrs. Tyree is survived by a son, Benjamin P. Tyree of the District; a daughter, Sherry Jane Tyree of the District; three sisters, Ina Mae Church of Radford, Va., Dorothy Arlene Kiefer of Front Royal, Va., and Jo Critzer of Baltimore; a half-sister, Dorothy Maxine Ayers of Alleghany County, Va.; and two grandchildren.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
