Charles R. Grant, 87, insurance agent

Charles Roeder Grant, the founder of the Charles R. Grant Insurance Agency, died Nov. 5 of congestive heart failure at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. He was 87.

Mr. Grant graduated from Sidwell Friends School and attended the University of Maryland. Before establishing his own agency in 1953, he worked for the Washington Loan and Trust Bank, the Travelers Insurance Co. in Baltimore and Howard & Hoffman Insurance Agency in the District.

He served on the boards of Suburban Hospital and Chevy Chase Village. He was especially involved with his alma mater, serving in the President’s Club, Colonnade Society, the Terrapin Club and as a trustee on the Maryland Educational Foundation. He also was a member of All Saints Church and of the Chevy Chase Club, where he served as chairman of the Insurance Committee.

His wife, Tempe Curry, died in 2001.

He is survived by his children, Ridgely Grant of Rockville, Elise Brown of Potomac, Tempe Thomas of Bethesda, Charlotte Sears of Chevy Chase, and Grandville Grant of Easton, Md.; and 15 grandchildren.
