The Emerald Bowl extended a formal invitation to Navy yesterday to play in its Dec.30 game, and a source close to the team said the Midshipmen will accept the offer.

“We have an invitation to the Emerald Bowl,” Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk said. “We will make an announcement [today].”

The San Francisco-based bowl has been a favorite, along with the Liberty Bowl, to land Navy for the past week. Gladchuk said the Emerald Bowl is attractive, citing the location and the strong naval presence on the west coast.

Emerald Bowl executive director Gary Cavalli was at Navy’s 54-21 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Cavalli expressed his interest in the Midshipmen earlier last week.

“I was impressed with [Cavalli],” Gladchuk said. “He’s a sharp businessman and he’s done a great job with that bowl. He did a great job relating their enthusiasm in our meeting [yesterday].”

The game is played at SBC Park, home of the San Francisco Giants. Navy’s opponent will be either New Mexico or Wyoming. The Las Vegas Bowl has the first pick between the two teams, and the Lobos defeated the Cowboys 16-9 on Saturday.

“We had a great meeting,” Cavalli said. “I’m pretty confident. I think we’re in pretty good shape. I think it will be a very exciting announcement [today].”
