Waterfront homes are few and far between in Northern Virginia, and some forested homesites offer water views only in winter.

But the home now on the market at 1466 Waterfront Road in Reston’s sought-after Newport Shores offers a sweeping vista of lake water from many rooms, the deck, the back lawn and the private dock — which conveys with the property.

Priced at $1,300,000, this contemporary-style home, built nine years ago by the Gulick Group, provides an open and airy setting. Amenities include three gas fireplaces; transoms above most windows in the home; decorative columns; ceiling fans; and surround-sound wiring for parties on the lower level, which also has a bar and kitchenette.

Professional landscaping presents an unobtrusive complement to the lake views and defines the borders of the property gracefully. When the weather permits, residents can relax on a spacious main-level deck accessible from both the living room and kitchen.

A distinctive spiral staircase, painted teal to match the railing, leads to the back yard, where flagstone steps lead to the dock and the water’s edge.

Even in cooler weather, sparkling sun on the lake adds warmth to the interior rooms of this property.

An etched-glass front door leads into the foyer, which opens onto the living room and dining room, all of which have oak hardwood flooring. A side casement window, as well as transoms over it and the front door, floods the foyer with natural light.

The living room includes a gas fireplace surrounded by ceramic tile, with glass-enclosed shelves and two art niches on the adjacent wall.

Decorative columns define the living and dining rooms, a large casement window with a transom provides natural light, and the room is enhanced with a contemporary-style ceiling fan and recessed lighting.

French doors link the living room with the deck and offer a view of the lake.

The dining room includes three transoms on one wall, two casement windows with transoms overlooking Lake Newport, and contemporary-style sconces and chandelier.

A cathedral ceiling soars overhead in the kitchen, which features a dramatic window wall with three windows, including a circular window overlooking Lake Newport.

The breakfast area has four casement windows with transoms, all framing water views.

The kitchen includes 12-inch ceramic-tile flooring, a contemporary-style ceiling fan, 42-inch cabinets, granite counters and a granite center island, a separate pantry, additional cabinet space with a television cubicle, upgraded appliances, and a glass door leading to the deck.

The main level also includes a guest bedroom with three casement windows and transoms, hardwood floors and a closet, plus private access to a full hall bath.

This bath has been compartmentalized so it functions as both a powder room and a full bath, and it includes 12-inch ceramic-tile flooring and recessed lighting.

A large laundry room with a coat closet, abundant cabinets, windows and even a built-in bench for taking off shoes and resting backpacks is linked to the two-car garage, which has windows and a work station with Corian counters and cabinets.

The upper-level master suite includes double doors, a contemporary-style ceiling fan, a gas fireplace with a remote control and four large windows with transoms. The master bath has views of Lake Newport through four casement windows with transoms. The bath area has two large walk-in closets with built-in shelving, a linen closet, an extra storage closet, plenty of cabinet space and ceramic-tile flooring. The bath includes a Jacuzzi tub and a separate ceramic-tile shower, plus double vanity sinks.

The second bedroom includes tall casement windows and transoms, while the third bedroom, a step-down from the main hall, has a vaulted ceiling and multiple windows on three sides of the room. These rooms share a hall bath, with ceramic-tile flooring.

The upper level also includes a home office with a loft opening overlooking the living room. The office includes built-in shelves and desk space, recessed lighting, and casement windows with transoms.

The lower level has been designed for entertaining and relaxing, with a recreation room that includes French doors opening onto the back lawn and views of Lake Newport.

The gas fireplace has a mantel and ceramic-tile surround, plus built-in shelving perfect for home-theater equipment or electronics.

The room has plenty of space for a billiards table and a separate exercise area.

The bar area and kitchenette include a contemporary-style half-moon counter opening into the recreation room, plus an art niche, a full-size refrigerator and freezer with an automatic ice maker, and plenty of counter and cabinet space for easy catering.

Double-glass doors link the recreation room and a bedroom, which is perfect for a guest suite or an in-law suite. The bedroom has views of Lake Newport and a double-door closet leading into the full hall bath, which has ceramic-tile flooring.

Abundant storage and work space has been created in two finished storage rooms and a long hall, all of which feature shiny black-and-white flooring, with the exposed pipes overhead painted a complementary shade of red.

The storage rooms include built-in shelving, and the cabinets and desk, which have been placed in the larger room, convey to the buyers.

An additional storage closet is under the stairs.

Although residents of this lakeside retreat may not want to leave their private vacation spot, they will be tempted by the amenities of Reston, which include several swimming pools, tennis courts, trails, playing fields, shopping centers, an ice rink, a movie theater, a library, two community centers serving a thriving arts community, and Reston Town Center’s many restaurants and shops.
