Basil Thompson, 67, ballet maste

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Basil Thompson, an acclaimed ballet master on sabbatical from the University of Iowa, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest. He was 67.

Mr. Thompson, trained by the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet school in London, was a former soloist with the American Ballet Theatre in New York and former artistic director of the Milwaukee Ballet. He also was a former master of the Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet, and only recently had reconstructed “Petrouchka” for Joffrey’s “A Tribute to Nureyev.”

Mr. Thompson joined the faculty at Iowa in 2000.
