Living close to Old Town Alexandria and Washington are reason enough to choose a home, but when a property is available with almost one acre of land — including an unspoiled rustic portion adjacent to a creek — it gets irresistible.

When Floyd Richard purchased the corner lot at 3700 Duke St. in Alexandria in 1988, he chose to place the house on a slight ridge above Turkey Creek and set it back from Duke Street to maximize privacy.

This year, Mr. Richard renovated the house and rejuvenated the landscaping that surrounds the home, finally placing it on the market for $1,200,000.

The newly resurfaced driveway leads to a two-car side-entry garage with attic storage above, and the front walk, parking pad and front yard have all been brightened with flowers and shrubs.

The main and upper levels have Bruce hardwood flooring in every room, and throughout the house, golden oak plantation blinds cover each window.

Deep crown moldings were installed on all three levels, adding a distinguished touch to the rooms, and chair-rail moldings were added to the dining room.

The new solid wood front door features etched glass and opens onto a two-story foyer with a dramatic ceiling medallion and chandelier overhead.

To the left of the foyer is the formal living room, which includes tall front windows.

To the right of the foyer is the library, which has built-in bookcases, windows on two sides including an oversized picture window framing a view of the woods, and a door leading to the side deck. An open doorway links the library with the family room. Nearby is a renovated powder room.

At the back of the home, the formal dining room includes two tall windows overlooking the back yard. The rest of the back of the house has an open floor plan leading from the family room through the breakfast area into the kitchen.

The family room includes a wood-burning fireplace and French doors, which open onto the back deck. The renovated kitchen has a multitude of cherry cabinets, along with recessed lighting, stainless-steel appliances, granite counters and a distinctive black tile backsplash, which has also been installed on the back of the breakfast bar.

While entertaining can be accomplished with ease in the formal and informal rooms of the main level, the 1,500-square-foot basement level has also been finished for additional living areas.

The lower level features Berber carpeting, crown moldings and French doors leading to a patio with access to both decks. One area of the basement includes built-in shelving and a full bath, along with space for casual seating.

On the opposite side of the stairs, the basement includes one large finished room, which is perfect for a card room or game room. A door opens off this room into another finished room, which can function as an exercise room, home office or additional space for guests.

The upper level features three secondary bedrooms, each with a ceiling fan and one or two large closets. Each bedroom has two tall windows with wood plantation blinds. Hardwood flooring has been installed along the hall and in all the bedrooms, along with crown moldings.

These three bedrooms share the renovated hall bath, which has a built-in linen closet and a double-sink marble vanity. Attic storage is accessible from the hall outside the bath.

The master suite includes a ceiling fan and two tall windows at the front of the house. Two separate walk-in closets have each been improved with built-in shelving, varied-height closet rods and built-in dressers.

Mr. Richard extensively renovated the master bath to create a truly luxurious retreat. The bath includes a ceiling fan and exhaust fan, ceramic-tile floors, and a marble vanity on one side of the room with another marble vanity with a sink on the other.

Each of these vanities has extensive furniture-quality cherry wood cabinets both above and below the counter. In one corner of the bath is a glass-enclosed shower with multiple shower heads. A deep whirlpool tub occupies the other side of the bath.

Whether it is the interior or the exterior features of the home that have the greatest appeal, potential buyers will certainly also be attracted by the location of this home, within an easy commute to Old Town Alexandria, the Pentagon and Washington.
