Flora Schroebel, 99, retired nurse

Flora Elizabeth Smith Schroebel, a retired nurse, died Sept. 2 at Commonwealth Care Center in Fairfax of congestive heart failure. She was 99.

Born in Johnston County, N.C., she survived a near-fatal accident when her clothes caught fire as her brothers burned some vegetation. At 11, she took over running the household when her mother died in childbirth.

She attended the Brevard Institute before graduating in 1928 from nursing school at George Washington University Hospital. She devoted most of the rest of her life to helping others.

She retired from private-duty nursing in hospitals in 1975, but within 10 years was nursing a number of older women in their homes.

She is survived by a daughter, Elva Card of Fairfax; and three grandsons.
