Although castles may be common sights in Europe, they are rare in Northern Virginia. The brick estate at 2407 Oakmont Court in Oakton

is listed as a Colonial-style home, but the turret in one corner, the promenade across the front of the home, the elegant sweep of the front lawn and the pond with a waterfall all combine to give an impression of grandeur worthy of royalty.

This palatial home, now on the market for $1,700,000, rests on a low hill not far from Stuart Mill Road, a rural street of gently rolling hills flanked by large estates, some with grazing horses.

The custom-designed Oakmont Court home includes a lot of 1.74 acres with extensive professional landscaping, flagstone patios, a raised terrace with a hot tub, curving stone walls, a wooded area and a play area in addition to the pond.

A level section of the lawn awaits the construction of a swimming pool by new owners, and a cabana has already been added to this area, which includes a half-bath.

A circular driveway with four stone entrance posts creates a grand arrival for guests, and a wide terrace across the home’s front provides a place for guests to gather and admire the view from this angle. Overhead, varied rooflines hint at the variety of rooms found inside.

Inside, more than 8,910 finished square feet easily can accommodate a large crowd and an extended family. The main level has been designed with both open and enclosed rooms for entertaining formally or casually, most with hardwood flooring. A large half-moon window fills the foyer with sunlight, while two chandeliers and wall sconces add elegant artificial lighting.

The focal point for this level is a sunken great room at the center of the home surrounded by a gallery with arches and columns. A fireplace flanked by built-in shelving is on one wall, while additional steps lead to an interior terrace with three Palladian windows with French doors opening onto a patio.

The formal rooms of the home are primarily in one wing and include a library with two walls of arched cherry bookcases, Palladian windows and pocket doors which lead into the living room. The formal living room has a bow window, arched doorways and a marble fireplace, while the adjacent dining room includes a crystal chandelier and a ceiling medallion.

A glass door between the living room and dining room provides a second entrance to the home from the driveway. A formal powder room is nearby.

The kitchen includes abundant 42-inch cherry cabinets, granite counters, a hand-painted bar sink, a Corian center island, a built-in wine rack, ceramic-tile flooring, a tile backsplash, a built-in desk and upgraded appliances.

Behind the kitchen is a large laundry room with a door to the driveway, a door to the garage, extra storage and an adjacent full bath.

On the other side of the kitchen is a charming breakfast room with a glass door to a patio, ceramic-tile flooring and a raised-hearth fireplace with a hand-painted tile surround.

A rear staircase links the breakfast room with the upper level and is also accessible from the billiards and game room. This 25-by-15-foot room includes a wall of windows and partially overlooks the great room.

A private hall off the foyer, tucked under the main stairs to the upper level, leads to the first-floor master suite. A double-door entrance leads into the master sitting room, which has a marble fireplace, built-in bookcases and a bow window.

The master bedroom features a tray ceiling with a cornice, French doors to a raised terrace with a hot tub, and an oversized dressing room and walk-in closet with custom-designed built-ins.

The master bath features a tub, custom-designed vanities, a shower with two shower heads and a spiral staircase to the upper-level exercise room, which has been placed in the turret and includes a sauna.

Two of the upper-level bedrooms have been designed as suites, each with a separate sitting room large enough to be an extra bedroom. Each of these suites includes a private full bath, elaborate moldings and a walk-in closet. The second of these suites includes a window seat.

Two additional bedrooms on the upper level share a connecting bath with a double-sink vanity, and each includes a charming window seat.

The upper level also includes extensive floored attic space with windows. Future owners may want to convert some of this area to additional finished living space.

The finished lower level has a recreation room and several storage rooms. This home also includes a security system with exterior and interior motion detectors and video cameras, two telephone lines, an intercom system, a central vacuum system, and computerized controls for the three gas furnaces and all the lights.

With its extensive grounds and abundance of interior living space, this home could easily accommodate a large family or welcome a constant stream of overnight guests to the Virginia version of a French country estate.
