When architect P.D. Gravett designed the home at 2116 Owls Cove Lane in Reston, he set the home down a steeply sloping driveway with a thicket of oak trees in the background.

The current owners love the placement of their home not just for the wooded views, which are spectacular in the fall, but also because each of the neighboring homes is on a different level. When a home has as many windows and skylights as this one, it is nice to be able to leave the windows uncovered and yet retain privacy.

Built 24 years ago, this contemporary home exemplifies the best of Reston spirit, with angled walls and an open floor plan for modern tastes, and a wood siding exterior that blends with its surroundings, an important part of Reston’s appeal.

At the end of the cul-de-sac, a community pier brings neighbors together in warm months to launch their canoes and kayaks. A walking path encircles Lake Audubon, a treat for runners and dog-walkers.

On the market for $799,000, this home offers a location within walking distance of tennis courts, swimming pools, all three public schools and a neighborhood shopping center. For night life, dining, shopping, concerts and ice-skating, Reston Town Center is within a few minutes’ drive.

The dramatic interior of this home may tempt the owners to stay inside permanently, though, enjoying their soaring white walls and expanses of glass.

Just inside the front door is a ceramic-tiled foyer with a closet and a powder room. The foyer opens into the living room, which shares a two-sided fireplace with the adjacent dining room.

Both rooms have hardwood flooring. The fireplace rests inside a white wall with openings on either side. A sliding glass door links the living room with the main-level deck, while a second set of sliding glass doors in the dining room adds more outdoor access.

Eight skylights have been set into the cathedral ceiling above the living and dining rooms, filling the rooms with light from the home’s southern exposure and adding to its warmth during winter. An attic fan keeps the home cool in summer, working with the air conditioning.

Mr. Gravett originally planned an enclosed garage for this home, but the original owners decided to use the garage space as an expansive main-level library. The covered carport just outside the library provides parking for two cars.

The current owners hired an architect to draw up plans for enclosing the carport for a garage and creating additional living space but chose not to continue the project.

The architectural plans, worth $4,000, convey to the buyers so they can continue with the project if they wish.

The existing library includes hardwood flooring to match that in the living room, plus floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that line two walls.

Nearby are a butler’s pantry for easy entertaining and extra storage, a pantry and a broom closet.

The kitchen opens onto a sharply angled breakfast nook with views of the woods and includes a pass-through to the dining room that can be closed with a set of vertical blinds. The unfinished-clay ceramic-tile flooring in the kitchen and breakfast room offers the warmth of brick and blends with the new granite counters. The owners recently upgraded their kitchen appliances.

Carpeted stairs lead to the upper level, where the master bedroom suite includes a small private deck. The bedroom includes an opening overlooking the dining room below, sharing in the light from the skylights and sliding glass doors.

The master suite features a walk-in closet with extensive built-in drawers and clothing rods, along with access to the attic storage that covers the length of the home. A vanity with sink is across a narrow hall from the closet.

The master bath has a second vanity and sink, along with a large shower with tumbled tile and a tub with a glass enclosure. This bath is shared with the second bedroom, which has a walk-in cedar closet. The second bedroom can function as a home office or nursery space or as a master sitting room.

The finished lower level features a large family room with sliding glass doors leading to a third deck, added by the current owners. This 1,200-square-foot deck reaches out to the landscaped yard and woods. In one corner of the family room is a wood stove surrounded by tile. The chimney needs to be replaced on this wood stove for it to function.

The lower level includes two additional bedrooms and a full bath with a marble-tiled shower and floor, plus two vanities with sinks.

In addition, the large laundry room has a new washer and new dryer, a laundry chute reaching to the upper level and a new tile floor.

This room includes extra storage shelving, plus a kitchen sink and cabinets. The space could be expanded into a kitchenette, if desired. Two more storage rooms, including one outfitted as a darkroom, complete the lower level. Additional storage space has been tucked beneath the staircase.

Sleek contemporary style and an open floor plan create an easy atmosphere for entertaining indoors and outdoors. The home’s attractiveness is completed by the bonus of Reston’s amenities, both natural and man-made.
