As vote-counting got underway in Iraq late last week, authorities announced preliminary nation-wide turnout estimates near 70 percent of the Iraqi electorate.

“The number of those who took part in the ballot should be between 10 and 11 million voters, according to our first estimates,” said an election official.

In the former insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, turnout was 85 to 95 percent.
