This week, for the first time, the United Nations pronounced Iraq’s elections “transparent and credible” despite ongoing calls by some Sunnis for new elections. “We at the U.N. see no justification in calls for a rerun of the elections,” Craig Jenness, the U.N. Iraq election coordinator, said in a press conference Wednesday. The announcement adds further support to the consensus judgment that despite limited flaws and irregularities the Iraq elections were fair and representative of the Iraqi electorate.
