Matthew Cazan, 93, FBI, Justice official

Matthew John Cazan, a former FBI and Justice Department official and longtime resident of Falls Church, died Dec. 29 of natural causes at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He was 93.

Born in Romania on March 10, 1912, Mr. Cazan attended the University of Bucharest Law School, Youngstown College in Ohio, and Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. A political science educator, he was a lector and instructor at Georgetown and at George Washington University. He also lectured at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Mr. Cazan worked at the Justice Department headquarters from 1947 to 1969, specializing in counterespionage and foreign language translation. He joined the FBI in 1963 and remained with the bureau until his retirement in 1994.

Mr. Cazan is survived by his wife of 70 years, Sylvia Buday Cazan of Falls Church; a son, Matthew John George Cazan of Murdo, S.D.; and two granddaughters.
