Washington Capitals goalie Olie Kolzig is expected to join Eisbaren Berlin in the German Elite League within the next week to 10 days, bringing to nine the number of Caps who are playing in Europe during the lockout of NHL players.

Kolzig said three weeks ago he intended to go to Germany to play if the lockout continued and if he could obtain the insurance he felt was necessary to protect himself in case of injury.

Efforts to reach Kolzig last night were unsuccessful. An announcement on his signing with the German club is expected within a few days.

Kolzig, raised in Canada but the son of German nationals, is being counted on to help boost Berlin into the playoffs. The club is in fifth place but just five points out of the league lead. Kolzig has represented Germany in two Olympic Games and in one IIHF world championship.
