OCEAN CITY (AP) — With the sale of the town’s last campground, this is the final summer for oceanside RV renters.

Among those ordered to leave by Nov. 20 is Laurel couple Lee and Catherine Roberts, who 37 years ago parked their trailer for the summer and started friendships that now span three generations.

However, with $800,000 condos now looming over their modest vacation spot, they were not surprised to learn the owners of the Ocean City Campground have sold the property.

“This is going to be a real emotional separation,” Catherine Roberts, 66, a retired administrative assistant, told the Baltimore Sun. “All our friends are here. All our kids grew up here in the summers, and now it’s our grandchildren growing up together. … It’s like we’ve all been in this wonderful little box as everything changed.”

Mid-Atlantic Shore Properties Inc., the Baltimore-based company that owns the campground, sent a notice to renters saying the firm received “an unsolicited offer” for the 2-acre site, off 70th Street and less than two blocks from the beach.

The company, which operates other camps in Maryland and Delaware and a marina on Kent Island, has not disclosed the buyer or a sale price.

“This is it in Ocean City, the only place left where a modest-income family can pull in a trailer for an affordable vacation,” said Lee Roberts, 69, a retired postal worker. “It does make you wonder how families can afford the traditional summer vacation. Things are changing.”

The campground has lots for 200 trailers. It dates to at least the early 1960s, but the recreational vehicles parked here provide modern, comfortable summer homes.

Twenty-seven campground renters have bought lots at a similar recreational vehicle park just a few miles across Assawoman Bay.
