Ruth Buchanan, Sophie Danforth (the mother-in-law of Sen. Lincoln Chafee), Joy Sundlun, Frederick and Diana Prince, A. Michael Sullivan Jr. and others with dual ties to Washington and the Ocean State were sighted in the crowd along with the usual band of merry — though somewhat soggy — stalwarts, including Austin and Gogo Kiplinger, Albert and Shirley Small, Townsend and Valerie Burden, Bitsey Folger, Elinor Farquhar, Philip and Nina Pillsbury, Janet Bruce, Baba Groom, Diana Walker, John Irelan and Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.

Choosing to honor Mrs. Pell was one reason the garden party raised a record $165,000 this year, Tudor Place Director Leslie Buhler announced before noting that the funds will help complete renovation of the mansion’s service wing to reflect its appearance between 1914 and 1923.

“It won’t exactly be ‘Upstairs, Downstairs at Tudor Place,’ she said with a chuckle, “because all the rooms are on the first floor.”
