Tantallon is the name shared by several neighborhoods in Fort Washington with home prices ranging from the $200,000s near Indian Head Highway to $1,000,000 or more on the Potomac River. The diverse architecture combined with such varied recreational amenities as sailing, golf, tennis or hiking make the Tantallon community appealing.

In southern Prince George’s County, five miles from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, between Indian Head Highway and the Potomac River, Tantallon also enjoys a popular neighborhood gathering spot, the Tantallon Country Club, and an active citizens’ association.

An all-brick Colonial in Tantallon North, built by Winchester Homes, is now on the market for $749,000. This home has been impeccably maintained. Situated on a peaceful tree-lined street, the three-level home boasts dual master suites along with five full and two half baths.

An intercom system helps family members communicate in the 4,700-square-foot home, custom built in 1988.

Inside, the foyer features a lofty vaulted ceiling, ceramic-tile floors and a full window next to the entry door. Hardwood floors grace the formal and casual rooms on the main level, in the living and dining rooms as well as the family room and kitchen.

A wide doorway leads from the foyer directly into the extensive living room where there is enough space for several sets of couches and chairs.

The dining room is an artsy combination of paint and wallpaper separated by chair-rail molding. A window in the back looks out into the back yard. A doorway leads from the dining room directly into the kitchen.

The kitchen has been upgraded with newer appliances, including a white side-by-side refrigerator. The cook in the family will appreciate the double oven and a cooktop centered in the breakfast bar.

Cabinet space is abundant and the curtains on the kitchen windows match the blue floral wallpaper exactly. In fact, the custom drapes, window and wall treatments all convey.

The breakfast bar is all that separates the cooking area from the breakfast room. The cozy breakfast room appears to be floating above the sunken family room. It offers a nice view overlooking the room.

A Tiffany-style light fixture hangs above the kitchen table, and the backyard deck can be seen through a set of French doors with vertical blinds. The owners like the privacy in the level back yard that backs to mature trees.

Three steps lead down to the family room, which also has a set of French doors. These doors lead into the back yard by way of a concrete patio off the nearby deck.

A floor-to-ceiling wood-burning brick fireplace and hearth create a wonderful focal point and helps bring warmth and style into the room.

Also on the first floor is an au pair suite with hardwood floors that could be utilized as a main-level bedroom, exercise room or home office. This room has a walk-in closet and a full bathroom.

The family room has an entryway that opens to a long hall leading to either the two-car garage or downward to the finished lower level. This space adds to family comfort with a paneled recreation room, wet bar and storage space for those seasonal items.

In addition, this basement has a full bathroom and walk-up access into the yard.

Take the staircase back in the foyer to go up to the second level where there are two full-sized master bedrooms. A comfortable sitting room is at the entrance of the first master suite. This eye-pleasing bedroom has raised sleeping quarters that overlook the sitting area.

Double doors lead to the master bathroom to the step-up Jacuzzi tub.

A laundry room on the second level, across from this master suite, makes washing and putting away clothes less of a chore.

Both master bedrooms are carpeted and feature a walk-in closet and a ceiling fan.

The second master suite is generously sized and has a private ceramic bath. The remaining threebedrooms are also nicely appointed.

In addition to being close to a golf course, two marinas and several national parks, residents of the Tantallon community will be just a short drive from the new National Harbor, which, once completed, will be home to upscale restaurants and retailers on the Potomac River.
