A bracketed word in a quotation by House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, in yesterday’s editions changed the meaning of the comment. Mr. Hoyer said, “Those who earn their living by the sweat of their brow, go to work every day, work hard, play by the rules, are hurt by this bill, while those who clip coupons are helped by this bill.”

The Washington Times incorrectly reported the number of times during his tenure as NAACP president that Kweisi Mfume met with President Bush. Mr. Mfume had only one such meeting — for 45 minutes — with Mr. Bush in December.

D.C. Council member Kathy Patterson’s ward was reported incorrectly in a Briefly item about a missing-persons bill in yesterday’s Metropolitan section. She represents Ward 3.
