LAFAYETTE, Calif. (AP) — The wife of prominent defense lawyer and TV legal analyst Daniel Horowitz was found slain in the couple’s San Francisco-area home, police said.

Mr. Horowitz, who is leading the defense in a sensational murder trial in Martinez, called 911 Saturday evening to report that the body of his wife, 52-year-old Pamela Vitale, was in the entryway of their home, police said.

Contra Costa County authorities confirmed her identity yesterday morning and were investigating her death as a homicide, said sheriff’s department spokesman Jimmy Lee. An autopsy was planned for today.

“We talked to a number of people last night, but there’s nobody in custody,” Mr. Lee said yesterday. “We’re still trying to establish a motive.”

A call to the Horowitz home from the Associated Press was not answered late Saturday.

“I can’t talk,” Mr. Horowitz told the San Francisco Chronicle when reached on his cell phone Saturday. “I can’t. It’s beyond words.”

Mr. Horowitz is a television legal commentator who often appears on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. He was a frequent commentator on the Laci Peterson murder trial.
