Seen and heard last night at MCI Center

13 Players on the Caps’ roster who have been drafted in the first round. The list includes Andrew Cassels in 1987; Olie Kolzig and Jamie Heward in 1989; Brendan Witt in 1993; Jeff Friesen in 1994; Dainius Zubrus in 1996; Mathieu Biron in 1998; Maxime Ouellet in 1999; Brian Sutherby in 2000; Shaone Morrisonn in 2001; Steve Eminger and Boyd Gordon in 2002; and Alexander Ovechkin in 2004.

At 7:21 of the second period, just 27:21 into his NHL career, rookie Alexander Ovechkin, constantly in motion, wound up deep in the Columbus slot and connected with a one-timer 30 feet out. The goalie was defenseless.

Forty seconds into last night’s season-opening and career-starting game, Ovechkin hammered Columbus defenseman Radoslav Suchy into the rear boards so hard it knocked supports loose holding the glass in place. He showed immediately he was no shrinking violet. Welcome to the NHL.
