The Lake Anne neighborhood of Reston includes several town home developments from the 1960s, when the community was first planned by Robert E. Simon. Contemporary in style, these town homes have stood the test of time, appealing to 21st-century buyers who appreciate abundant windows, separation of living and dining spaces onto different levels and the interior “windows” — openings in the walls — that allow light and air to pass from one space to the next.

The owners of the home at 11450 Links Drive in Reston not only found their town home appealing, but they improved it with a complete renovation that expands the living spaces on two levels and allows for a modern-day master suite with a sitting room, room-size walk-in closet and a spacious luxury bath, all rarities in a town home.

Now on the market for $599,900, this town home has more than 3,000 square feet of living space.

The entire rear wall of the home features floor-to-ceiling windows on every level, framing views of the Hidden Creek Golf Course. Gently rolling greens, mature trees and plants and a walking path provide a serene view for every season.

Beginning in 2001 with fresh paint and a new gas heater, the owners gradually transformed their home from a typical town home into a showcase for modern style. Refinished hardwood floors, a new front patio with stone pavers and a spectacular master-suite remodel followed in 2002.

The master suite now includes about 700 square feet, with a small bedroom transformed into a walk-in closet with custom organizers including a central built-in dresser. The entire bedroom was rewired, and new subflooring and plumbing were added to the master bath. The bath now includes Italian-tile flooring with matching Italian tiles in the glass-enclosed, separate shower. In one corner is a whirlpool tub, and each of the two vanities has a granite counter, a hammered stainless steel sink and a cherry cabinet.

In 2004, the owners enclosed a deck off the dining room to create additional living space.

On the main level, a sunroom with two sliding glass doors overlooks the golf course, while on the upper level the master suite now has a sitting room with two sliding glass doors and three skylights above. The owner uses this space for an artist’s studio and reading nook, with a chaise lounge facing the golf course. Future owners can use the space as a den or home office, a nursery or sitting room.

Through the years, the owners have updated the baths with unusual fixtures, added Venetian plaster and faux painting to walls and included such practical improvements as recessed lighting, a new roof, new gutters and new sliding glass doors.

Besides the master-suite renovation, the most striking remodeling project is the kitchen. In 2003, the owners transformed the kitchen with unusual style and verve, which they call “contemporary eclectic,” including a cork floor and black concrete counters. New maple cabinets were added, including pull-out shelving and oversized drawers for extra storage.

Italian-tile backsplashes were added to the walls along with a dramatic tin ceiling overhead. Stainless steel appliances and pendant lighting were also added, along with a breakfast bar with a black glass top. Near the sliding glass door to the front patio is an additional maple cabinet with a black concrete top that extends the kitchen storage.

Additional black concrete was available, so the owners added a low bench to the adjacent dining room for extra seating when entertaining. The dining room includes a large interior window opening overlooking the living room and also opens onto the adjacent sunroom facing the golf course.

The main level also has a foyer with a closet, faux-painted walls and a powder room. Hardwood stairs with open railings lead to the living room, which has Venetian plaster walls, a marble fireplace, hardwood flooring and a back wall of floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

A few additional wood steps lead to the lower level, where the recreation room has been remodeled with laminate hardwood flooring, recessed lighting and an updated marble fireplace with a contemporary-style wood mantel. Sliding glass doors link this room to the rear deck, which has built-in benches. Beyond the deck are a lawn and then the golf course greens. Future owners may want to extend the deck or add garden beds.

The lower-level powder room features a new vanity with a granite top and a contemporary glass sink. Adjacent to the powder room is a spacious utility, storage and laundry room, which has space for a workroom. Additional storage closets have been placed under the stairs.

The upper level includes the master suite, a linen closet and an updated bath with pale blue tile counters and pale blue ceramic-tile flooring. The central landing includes hardwood flooring and space to create a reading area or even add a small computer desk.

The second bedroom includes tall windows overlooking the front patio plus built-in shelving along one wall. The closets in both of the secondary bedrooms and the linen closet have been customized with additional wood shelving. The third bedroom, known as the “purple room,” also has a wall of windows overlooking the patio, and has been painted a dramatic shade of purple.

In addition to the appeal of this home and its golf course views, the surrounding neighborhood will also attract buyers. The home is privately placed at the back of a community courtyard with trees, grass and plants. Within walking distance are a shopping center, Reston Town Center, the Reston Regional Library, a swimming pool, tennis courts and the golf course.
