- The Washington Times - Thursday, September 29, 2005

As land prices in the Washington area climb and the limited inventory of homes cannot match the demand of buyers, home prices have inevitably climbed in the region over the past several years, bumping traditionally expensive homes into higher and higher price categories.

Million-dollar homes were once considered unusual, reserved for historic Georgetown mansions or horse farms in Potomac or Great Falls. Now, single-family homes and even town homes with prices beginning at $1,000,000 and higher are practically commonplace.

Upscale homes, in addition to sharing a stratospheric price, are also linked by the quality of materials used in construction, including such features as marble floors in foyers and baths, hardwood flooring in main-level rooms, specially designed light fixtures, granite kitchen counters, stainless steel restaurant-quality appliances and hardwood stairs.

Some luxury homes include large homesites, while others are located in more urban areas or near a Metro station, adding to their value.

For the purposes of this section, upscale homes are identified as priced from $900,000 and higher. Following is a sampling of some of the builders designing these sophisticated residences.
