Seabrook’s Bob Troup, an experienced turkey hunter, uses a 12-gauge 870 Remington pump shotgun with a 3-inch chamber. The barrel’s choke is modified.

Instead of regular lead pellet loads, he prefers a no-lead brand called Hevi-Shot.

“I use a 3-inch shell with number 6 shot for my first firing,” he said. “If the turkey requires a second shot, I follow it up with a number 5 load of Hevi-Shot.”

Please note he doesn’t think you need extra large goose loads that some turkey hunters use. Why? Troup doesn’t fire until the bird is in good range.

Spring turkey seasons:

Maryland April 18-May 23.

Virginia April 8-29; May 1-13.

Pennsylvania —April 29-May 27.

West Virginia —April 24-May 20.
