The DeVille was long heralded as the luxury symbol for the Cadillac marque.

For all intents and purposes, and conceptually, the newest iteration of Cadillac’s benchmark luxury sedan will in essence still be a DeVille, but it will now be called the DTS as part of the marque’s single-model market strategy (one exterior, one interior, but with several option packages).

The old DeVille has been externally enhanced in keeping with the rest of the stable’s signature appearance, while the interior design is all new.

Power for the DTS will come from a technologically advanced Northstar 4.6-liter V-8 that will be available in two configurations: a 291-horsepower L37 version; and a 275-horsepower LD8, both of which mate to a Hydra-Matic 4T80-E four-speed automatic transmission for gear transitions, with power delivered to the front wheels. The L37 revs higher and delivers more peak horsepower, while the LD8 places a greater emphasis on a quick launch and part-throttle response with greater peak torque.

The chassis also benefits from refinement, featuring an all-new front cradle design, with the engine mounted to the cradle, and the cradle mounted to the body rails. Integrated chassis control features include four-channel anti-lock brakes and traction control, four-channel StabiliTrak with Brake Assist, and Magnetic Ride Control. Wheel and tires are larger, as are the brakes.

Moving inside, one will enjoy heated and cooled seats up front, with heated seats aft. The wood-and-leather steering wheel is heated too, and there is trizone climate control. It’s possible to start the engine before you even reach it, via remote start on the key fob, with safety features to prevent children from driving away without you. The DTS is loaded with a most impressive list of equipment and features as standard fare to enhance one’s security and comfort, with advanced built-in communications technology, including MP3 capability.

OnStar is standard and XM satellite radio is ready to go with a nominal subscription fee.

The test DTS wore an exterior coat of Light Platinum metallic paint, with a complementing interior finished in Shale, accented by polished wood trim pieces highlighted with chrome.

The base price was set at $43,695, while the Sun and Sound Package, with express open sunroof and in-dash six-disc CD changer; 17-inch chrome wheels; and destination charge moving the final tally up to $47,080.

The 2006 Cadillac DTS four-door, luxury sedan will be sold in the U.S. and Canada, and will be exported for sale in Mexico, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. It is an expressive sedan that builds upon the appeal and strengths of the Cadillac brand.

Still a DeVille at heart, the DTS comes to market with performance, comfort and luxury in mind, with considerable attention given to precise fit and finish, and with high quality levels.

The top-of-the-line Cadillac sedan is no longer a float-and-roll road craft as were DeVilles of yore, but rather a stylish, powerful luxury cruiser, at home in urban or suburban settings. Power delivery is instantly responsive and romping on the accelerator will readily spin the front tires on takeoff.

The DTS marks a worthy return to the traditional, legendary luxury status of Cadillac.
