Last night at Comcast Center:

12 Combined starts for freshmen this season for Maryland (11 for Eric Hayes, one for Greivis Vasquez), matching the program’s combined total from the last three seasons. Ekene Ibekwe and D.J. Strawberry combined for 10 starts in 2003-04 and James Gist added two the next season.

“He doesn’t get a chance to play much, so he was very happy and I was happy for him. I told him he could do that any time as long as he makes it.”

— Gary Williams, on walk-on Jason McAlpin’s 3-pointer in the closing seconds. McAlpin, who didn’t hear Williams’ order to hold the ball, took the shot because he saw the shot clock expiring.

In a display of crisp ball movement so lacking in the last three games, Vasquez flung a pass to the left wing to guard Mike Jones, who promptly siphoned it inside to Gist for a layup to make it 11-4.
