Last night at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia:

The Caps had gone without scoring a goal until Brian Sutherby beat Robert Esche at 9:36 of the first period.

Doug Doull, the new Caps winger who played 35 games for Boston in 2003-04, wasted no time providing muscle. He sought an opponent to exchange punches with just four seconds into his first shift with the team after a promotion from Hershey. He and Donald Brashear were both sent off five minutes for fighting at 4:50 of the first period.

Heralded rookie Alex Ovechkin ended his five-game goal-less streak by scoring late in the second period, his 35th of the season.
