No deaths from terrorist or insurgent attacks against Shi’ites were reported in this year’s Ashura celebration, a marked improvement over the more than 50 celebrants killed and 150 wounded last year in six suicide attacks targeting Ashura celebrants.

Military analysts attribute the calm during Ashura — the Shi’ites’ holiest day — to increased and more effective patrols by local Iraqi security forces, weakened insurgent capabilities and a tightening of Anbar province’s border with Syria.
