The Buzz

Chad Hedrick — DOWN

Nick Buoniconti toasts Eric Heiden

Lindsey Kildow — UP

You can win without getting a medal

Jeremy Bloom — DOWN

Oh well, he always liked football better.

YOU KNOW SHE WON GOLD, BUT DID YOU KNOW …

Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister used to travel around the ski circuit with pet rats? Until they died.

UNFORGETTABLE

Lindsey Kildow probably had no business racing in the women’s downhill, not after she crashed Monday and had to be flown to a hospital. But this is one determined kid. She toughed it out and finished eighth, although that part of it is really unimportant. For that matter, the same goes for Carole Montillet-Carles, the 2002 gold medalist, who also crashed Monday and banged up her face. According to one report, she raced with her eyes taped open. There are pro athletes who make millions who do a lot less after withstanding a lot less.

REGRETTABLE

Nice luge course. In a week of crashes, not only did the U.S. team of Brian Martin and Mark Grimmette wipe out yesterday, but the Ukrainian team had an even worse accident with one of the lugers going to the hospital with a head injury. Sure, everybody likes speed, but this is getting ugly. Will it take a Dale Earnhardt-like episode to bring people to their senses?

ADD IT UP

1 Goal by Canada’s men’s hockey team in the first 21:54 of its game against Italy.

5 Goals by Canada in the next 12:43.

QUOTABLES

“You guys [reporters] put pressure on me to win the five golds. The five medals is not a big thing.”

— Chad Hedrick, whose speedskating men’s pursuit team failed to move into the semifinals after being defeated by Italy. Hedrick was bidding to equal American Eric Heiden’s five gold medals won in the 1980 Olympics.

“I came here to accomplish my goals. I didn’t come here to win any certain color medals. I was so close, you know.”

— American skier Jeremy Bloom, who finished sixth in the moguls.
