They are called the WAGS, the wives and girlfriends of the English soccer players who are following the team around Germany.

The most famous WAGS are Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham and Wayne Rooney’s girl, Colleen McLoughlin, 20, who has gone from unknown working-class girl to model to TV personality and finally to multi-millionaire in the last three years just by tagging along with Rooney. One English newspaper has a whole page dedicated to covering the WAGS’ every move. There’s even a WAG odds section, listing 33-1 that a photo of two WAGS fighting each other will appear in the British press. Of course the most famous U.S. WAG is former “Dawson’s Creek” actress Bianca Kajlich, the girlfriend of Landon Donovan.

Some teams are better on the field and some fans are noisier in the stands, but the great equalizer comes when the train is full and passengers all have to sit on the floor.

Italians, Americana and Brazilians — plus me — were jammed into the Frankfurt train from Kaiserslautern yesterday.

I stayed in my first hotel of the trip Saturday night, after I realized I wasn’t going to catch the train home to Hanover from the U.S. team’s game. I slept in my first soft bed in 10 days, after sleeping on a camp bed in the garden house since my arrival. The hotel staff was so nice. They didn’t even ask for my credit card when they gave me the key to my room.
