The Washington Redskins will open the 2006 season Sept. 11 against the Minnesota Vikings in the first “Monday Night Football” game on ESPN. The game will be part of a doubleheader that will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

The nightcap matches the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers.

The Vikings, 9-7 last year, have a new coach in former Philadelphia offensive coordinator Brad Childress and a new quarterback in Brad Johnson, Washington’s starter in 1999 and 2000.

The game also will mark the debut of ESPN’s new triumvirate of former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, play-by-play man Mike Tirico and sportswriter Tony Kornheiser.
