Exceptionally high quality construction and an attention to detail are expected in upscale homes, but when the home is designed and built by a home builder for use by his own family, the amenities and finishes are even better.

The home at 8142 Old Dominion Drive in McLean, set on more than 2 pastoral and wooded acres with a meandering stream, is now available for $2,395,000.

Built in 2001 by an area builder, this home has more than 9,000 finished square feet on three levels, plus a professionally landscaped lot.

At the end of a shared driveway off Old Dominion Drive, this stucco-and-stone estate includes a side-entry three-car garage as well as additional parking along the drive.

A curved flagstone walkway leads from the drive to the columned portico over the front door as well as to a side entrance to the home. Raised stone planters and landscape lighting add to the drama of the front entrance, while stone retaining walls define the edge of the property.

Double mahogany doors with leaded glass inserts open onto the grand foyer, a two-story space with marble flooring and a curving oak staircase.

A two-story rotunda created by the curving staircase leads into the two-story great room with its multiple windows recessed lighting and cherry hardwood flooring with maple inlay.

A two-sided gas fireplace is shared with the adjacent breakfast room. The builder added recessed lighting, a stereo system and an intercom to the entire home, along with ceiling fans in many rooms and four-zone heating and air conditioning.

Columns flank the entrance to the formal dining room off the foyer, a charming room with one curving wall, wainscoting, a ceiling medallion and cherry hardwood flooring with maple inlay and an arched window.

Across the foyer is a library with a columned entrance, cherry hardwood flooring with maple inlay, arched and transom windows, crown moldings and a glass door to the side yard.

Nearby is a powder room with marble flooring, a cherry vanity and granite counters.

Just beyond the dining room is a catering kitchen with a wet bar, a cooktop, a refrigerator, a wine rack, a dishwasher, cherry cabinets and granite counters. The main kitchen includes multiple preparation surfaces, cherry cabinets and granite counters, with an oversized granite center island with cabinets, a breakfast bar and a sink.

Mexican Saltillo tile flooring is accented with floral-patterned tiles.

Stainless steel appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a Viking dishwasher, a Viking cooktop and convection wall ovens.

The adjacent breakfast room shares a two-sided fireplace with the great room. Nearby is a back staircase to the upper level.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a family room with arched entrances, a tray ceiling, columns, a gas fireplace and cherry hardwood flooring with maple inlay. The family room includes a media alcove.

An arched opening links the gallery outside the family room with the hall leading to the second entrance to the home, where there are a full bath, a laundry room, a closet and a door to the garage.

Additional storage space has been added to the garage.

On the opposite side of the home is the first of two master suites. The first-floor master suite includes cherry hardwood flooring with a maple inlay, a wet bar and a three-sided gas fireplace.

Separate his-and-hers walk-in closets with wood built-in shelving flank the entrance to the marble master bath, a spacious room with separate cherry vanities with granite tops, a whirlpool tub set between marble columns in front of a deep bay window, and a glass-enclosed steam shower.

Upstairs, a gallery overlooks the great room and the foyer.

The second master suite features a built-in media alcove, golden oak hardwood flooring and a gas fireplace. The marble master bath has a whirlpool tub, a glass-enclosed shower, a cherry vanity with dual sinks set in the granite countertop and two walk-in closets with built-in shelving.

The additional two bedrooms on this level each have a walk-in closet and a private full bath.

The upper level also has a spacious computer room or game room in one corner with windows on two sides of the room and built-in bench seating. Off the hall is a large laundry room with two sets of cabinets and shelving. An art studio with a wall of windows is located off the laundry room.

The walk-out lower level has been finished as an open entertainment space perfect for large parties. A curving staircase opens into the recreation room, where marble columns define the space into a pool table area and a dance floor.

Parquet flooring covers most of the lower level.

Marble columns also frame the entrance to the lower level family room, which has a tray ceiling, windows on three sides and a gas fireplace. Two walk-in closets with shelving have been built along one wall, one of which can be converted to a wine cellar or a sauna, if desired.

Adjacent to the dance floor is a wet bar with marble flooring, cherry cabinets and a granite counter.

On the opposite side of the staircase is a carpeted home theater with an adjacent powder room.

The lower level also includes an in-law or au-pair suite with an outside entrance, a bedroom area, a kitchen and a private full bath.

The family that moves into this private palace may never want to leave, but if they choose to, they’ll find themselves within an easy drive of Great Falls, Tysons Corner, Reston, the Beltway and downtown Washington.
