William H. Pessaud Jr., an officer at an investment firm and financial planner, died April 27 of a heart attack as he was pitching in a church league softball game at Four Mile Run Park in Alexandria. He was 38.

Mr. Pessaud — known as Billy to his friends and family — was born April 13, 1968, at Alexandria Hospital. He grew up in Falls Church and graduated from J.E.B. Stuart High School in 1986.

In 1990, Mr. Pessaud graduated with a bachelor’s degree in government and philosophy from the College of William & Mary, where he also was a member of the Botetourt Chamber Singers. In 1993, he received a master’s degree in business administration from Marymount University.

Mr. Pessaud held finance-related positions since college and recently was named assistant branch manager at the Alexandria office of Smith Barney, where he also served as associate vice president of investments and as a financial adviser. In 2003, he received his financial planner certification from the Florida Institute of Technology.

During his youth, Mr. Pessaud was an active member of Arlington Baptist Church. In 1990, he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, where he sang in the choir and men’s ensemble and furthered his renown in the city as a talented tenor soloist.

Mr. Pessaud also served as chairman of deacons for two years at First Baptist and was a member of the recent pastoral search committee. He and his wife taught children in Sunday school and choir, and he served on the board of the Virginia Baptist Children’s Home in Salem, Va., from 1999 to 2003.

Mr. Pessaud was a member of many community organizations, including the Alexandria Rotary Club and Army-Navy Country Club. He was on the board of the Alexandria Boys Club, and soon was to join the board of the Alexandria Salvation Army. He also coached children at the Alexandria Soccer Association.

Mr. Pessaud is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Humphrey Pessaud of Alexandria; two sons, William Humphrey Pessaud and Jack Christian Pessaud; his parents, Swaim and William H. Pessaud Sr. of Falls Church; his grandparents, Virginia and John White of Arlington; and his in-laws, Patricia and Scott C. Humphrey of Alexandria.
