Stylish rooms, top-of-the-line architectural details and abundant built-ins fill a custom cedar shingle and stone residence on Glendale Road in Chevy Chase.

The house, constructed by builder Kevin Doyle on a private, partially wooded lot in 1998, is now available for $1,995,000.

Although it is surrounded by almost an acre of lush greenery and mature trees giving the impression that it’s in a rural setting, the home is within walking distance to bus service to the Bethesda Metro, and just a few blocks from the Crescent Trail that runs from Georgetown to Silver Spring. The location offers easy access to downtown Bethesda, downtown Washington and the newly rejuvenated downtown Silver Spring.

A driveway leads to the side-entry two-car garage and a stone walkway passes the neatly manicured lawn and leads to the covered front porch.

An open foyer greets guests and offers a peek into many of the surrounding main-level rooms.

Gentle paint tones add slight splashes of color in each room. The effect is neutral enough to accommodate any decorating scheme.

The wooden staircase with a carpet runner and white spindles takes center stage in the foyer. An open staircase with no door leads into the lower level and is located around the corner from the main staircase, with easy access from the front and back portion of the home.

Trendy, upgraded light fixtures accent the contemporary style found throughout all of the rooms. The dining room features a bay window that offers views of the cherry trees in the front yard. The living room also has its own view of the wooded surroundings. The woods are a protected area that cannot be built on.

Most of the main-level rooms have hardwood floors. The exception is the plushly carpeted family room in the back of the home. This step-down room has a coffered ceiling, gas fireplace, French door to the two-level deck and plantation shutters highlighting the windows.

In the family room and elsewhere in several rooms on all three levels are customized built-in bookcases providing ample space for books and places to neatly display collectibles. The family room built-in covers an entire wall from floor to ceiling.

The kitchen has an expansive granite island that the owner designed. It leads your eyes toward the outdoor scenery through the bowed window above the kitchen sink. Cherry cabinetry and the decorative ceramic tile backsplash add a touch of elegance.

A convenient second sink on the island comes in handy during food preparation. This multipurpose island also serves as a breakfast bar.

Recessed lights and three halogen pendant fixtures enhance the nighttime lighting.

The refrigerator door blends in with the cherry cabinetry, and additional appliances include a Jenn-Air double oven with a convection feature and a five-burner Thermador gas cooktop. Sliding doors in the kitchen lead onto a private, two-level deck.

Nearby a butler’s pantry with a granite top, tile finishes and glass door cabinets offers a nice work area for the dining room when entertaining.

Cherry bookcases line the walls of the wood-paneled office with two custom workstations and plantation shutters.

In addition, the main level features a full bathroom with granite counters and a laundry room that comes equipped with Maytag appliances and a utility sink.

Four bedrooms occupy the second level, which is also home to a media alcove off the hallway. The media alcove is a cozy, sunlit reading space with a window and three walls of cushioned built-in bench seating. Pocket doors allow the space to be closed off when reading or watching television.

The master-suite sitting room also has built-in bookcases, offering another second-level retreat. A vaulted ceiling adds to the spaciousness, and two walk-in closets feature custom built-in dressers for an organized look.

Luxuriously appointed, the master bathroom has decorative tumbled marble tiling and a Jacuzzi tub. The tub sits beneath corner windows that overlook the treetops outside.

The second bedroom has its own full bathroom. The third and fourth bedrooms share a connecting bath with double sinks and a separate room for the tub and commode.

The fifth bedroom is in the basement, which feels more like an upper-level room because it has above-ground windows. The bedroom has views of the woods and a full bath with blue tile floors.

Another room could work as a sixth bedroom. The owners are using this extra room, which has ceramic tile flooring and built-ins, as a studio or hobby room.

The recreation room is the largest lower-level space and has an entire wall of built-ins and a walkout to the back yard.

Nine-foot ceilings, a central vacuum, two-zone heating and air conditioning, and an invisible fence are some of the additional amenities that come with this home in the neighborhood known as the Hamlet of Chevy Chase.
