Alexandria police are trying to determine the motive for a shooting that left a woman dead in Del Ray last night.

The woman’s car was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth avenues around 10:15 p.m. when she was apparently shot by an unknown person.

Police say the woman’s vehicle traveled through the intersection and struck a utility poll before coming to a stop.

Paramedics called to the scene took the woman to Inova Alexandria Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Alexandria police spokeswoman Amy Bertsch says the name of the victim has not been released.

Investigators are not sure whether she was targeted or may have been the victim of a random shooting.

Miss Bertsch says investigators are still looking for leads in the case.
