Ten children were transported to area hospitals this morning after they were struck by a van at a Silver Spring school bus stop, authorities said.

The children were standing at the bus stop on Piney Branch Road when a van lost control and ran into them, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said. The group stood on a sidewalk near the entrance to an apartment complex.

They range in age from 10 to 14. Six of them were being treated for serious injuries - though none was considered life-threatening.

The children are students at White Oak Middle School, said Brian Edwards, a spokesman for Montgomery County Public Schools. The school system sent counselors to the hospitals and to the school Friday morning, he said.

Montgomery County police were investigating the incident. The incident occurred in Montgomery County near the Prince George’s County border.
