Given that U.S. captain Tom Lehman really couldn’t bench stumbling stars Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson for yesterday’s foursomes, the Rover would have loved for Lehman to have given the tandem a little psychological kick in the rump by pairing them together in the afternoon. Watching the two rivals interact, or perhaps implode a la 2004, would have provided more drama than anything the Ryder Cup has given us all week.

• OK, when you have two years to prepare for this deal, there’s no excuse for yesterday’s sartorial snafus. First, why were both teams wearing blue yesterday morning? How about a memo from one captain’s wife to another? Second, why would the Americans ever wear European blue, instead of navy? And third, how can any captain, even a tipsy weeble from Wales, put his charges in purple? While no captain will ever do worse than Ben Crenshaw’s hideous burgundy Sunday collage at Brookline, only Prince and TCU are allowed to do purple.

• Speaking of the Horned Frogs, the Rover wagers he was the only man in Ireland furiously scanning the internet at 2 this morning in search of college football results and box scores.
