TOP TO BOTTOM

NFL writer David Elfin of The Washington Times ranks the teams (Last week’s ranking in parentheses):

1. Colts (1) — Offense is missing its edge without James.

2. Chargers (2) — Mr. Rivers, meet Messrs. Lewis and Reed.

3. Bears (4) — Late TD throw to win at Minnesota could make Rex King.

4. Seahawks (5) — Denting Bears’ D minus Alexander will be difficult.

5. Bengals (9) — Another W, another arrest for Marvin’s 3-0 men.

6. Jaguars (6) — Threw a heck of a scare into Colts, as usual.

7. Ravens (7) — Sept. was a cakewalk. Oct. will be tougher, starting with Bolts.

8. Saints (17) — Return home was almost like it was scripted.

9. Falcons (3) — Ran into emotional buzzsaw in Superdome.

10. Steelers (10) — Battered Big Ben (34.3 rating) needs the bye week.

11. Vikings (11) — How long can Longwell be entire red-zone offense?

12. Eagles (14) — Typically bounced back smartly from choke vs. Jints.

13. Cowboys (12) — Didn’t need week off to prepare for Titans.

14. Broncos (18) — Victory over Pats makes bye week a breather, not a crisis.

15. Panthers (15) — Nearly blowing 17-0 lead not good omen for date with Saints.

16. Patriots (8) — Does Brady have horses to keep up with Palmer?

17. Giants (13) — Playoff teams don’t trail anyone 35-3 at halftime.

18. Jets (20) — Gashed by Bills, how will D deal with Colts?

19. Bills (16) — Fumbles ruined 475-yard explosion by Losman and Co.

20. Dolphins (22) — First Titans, now Texans. Schedule is saving Miami.

21. Redskins (23) — Let’s see how accurate Brunell is vs. old team.

22. 49ers (21) — Norv has the O cranking. Where’s the D, Mike?

23. Rams (24) — Opportunistic D and Wilkins’ leg are winning formula.

24. Bucs (25) — Super comeback ruined by Kasay FG, loss of QB Simms.

25. Cardinals (19) — Didn’t take long for QB controversy to start, did it?

26. Chiefs (26) — Need to rev up offense against porous 49ers.

27. Titans (28) — 11-point average won’t make for many victories.

28. Browns (29) — Off the schneid if not for Stover’s 52-yarder.

29. Packers (31) — Favre can still get it done … against bad teams.

30. Lions (27) — Mornhinweg, Mooch, Marinelli. Motown needs M-less coach.

31. Texans (30) — There’s no defense for this ugly defense.

32. Raiders (32) — Maybe bye week work could produce W over Browns.
