The Raiders just selected LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the first pick in this year’s draft. Oakland ultimately decided a quarterback was more important than taking the best player — receiver Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech.

The pick makes sense. Randy Moss, Jerry Porter and Ronald Curry are only good when they have somebody good to deliver them the football. In time, Russell should be able to do that — especially downfield.

It also shows that the Raiders are willing to show patience with Russell, who probably isn’t as NFL ready as Brady Quinn.
