Sen. John McCain of Arizona last night said he would definitely seek the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

The Republican senator made the long-expected announcement in a taping for the “Late Show With David Letterman” on CBS that aired last night.

“The last time we were on this program, I’m sure you remember everything very clearly that we say, but you asked me if I would come back on this show if I was going to announce,” Mr. McCain told the host. “I am announcing that I will be a candidate for president of the United States.”

He then added he would give a formal speech to that effect in early April.

After the taping, Mr. McCain told reporters at the Irish-American 10th Annual Awards reception last night that he would visit Iraq first. The 2006 midterm campaign had just ended when Mr. McCain took the first formal step toward a presidential run in November.
