The final spot in the field came down to Texas Tech, Purdue and Maryland. All three have their share of flaws. Texas Tech has lost four straight, including setbacks against Missouri and Nebraska. Purdue has some solid wins (Virginia, Illinois and Michigan State) but has accomplished nothing of note in a true road environment. Maryland has a comparable profile to Purdue right down to the RPI (40 to the Boilermakers’ 39), but is about as erratic a team as there is.

The choice was Texas Tech, basically because the Red Raiders beat Texas A&M; and Kansas. Beating those two teams anywhere is an accomplishment, but Bob Knight’s team would be wise to collect some more wins before Selection Sunday.
