Battles of the bands are like yard sales: If you’re willing to spend a few hours rooting through some stuff that doesn’t really interest you, you just may stumble upon some “Antiques Roadshow” gold. Tonight, Washingtonians can do some musical prospecting when the Velvet Lounge (915 U St. NW) kicks off the local preliminaries of the Emergenza Festival, a worldwide music competition held in 150 cities. The grand-prize-winner will receive (among other things) a record production deal and a slot on the Vans Warped Tour. Each night through Sunday, six to nine groups in genres ranging from ska punk to atmospheric hip-hop will duke it out on the lounge’s stage in hopes of advancing to the next round. Doors open at 8 p.m. For a full schedule and details, call 202/462-3213, or visit www.emergenza.net or www.velvetloungedc.com.
