John McCalla, editor of the Washington Business Journal, has died, the weekly business publication announced yesterday.

Details of his death were not available. He was 38.

“John was a great business journalist and a leader in our newsroom,” Publisher Alex Orfinger said.

“He had the eternal pursuit of a good business story and was a good friend to all of us at the Business Journal.”

Mr. McCalla was born in Philadelphia and in 1998 became a reporter for the Philadelphia Business Journal, a unit of American City Business Journals Inc., a Charlotte, N.C., publisher.

He moved to the District in 2001 after his promotion to managing editor of the Washington Business Journal, one of 41 publications in the American City chain. He was named editor in September.

He wrote a column for the Washington Business Journal’s editorial page, “So There,” which often focused on living downtown.

He was known for his dry wit and his love of travel, said the obituary on the journal’s Web site.
