Tapping film history

“Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance!” — a new film series at the Avalon Theatre (5612 Connecticut Ave. NW) — kicks off today with a close look at some of the 20th century’s best-loved movie musicals, their stars and their legacy. Screenings are on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. through July 25 and feature the commentary of film historian Max Alvarez. Today’s forecast calls for rain — the 1952 MGM classic “Singin’ in the Rain,” that is. Costs: $20 single admission; $45 to $60 for the series. 202/966-2149. www.theavalon.org.
